Freddie Roach at Pacquiao vs Marquez 4 Post Fight Press Conference

Freddie Roach at Pacquiao vs Marquez 4 Post Fight Press Conference - Manny Pacquiao wasn't at the after fight press con because he was having a CAT scan at the hospital. The test thankfully came out negative. Freddie Roach was the one who answered the questions.

Here's a transcript of the q&a:

Reporter: Toe to toe, did you feel that was the best way to win?

Freddie Roach: It was our strategy, it was working very well. I thought we we’re in control of the fight. I thought we almost had him out. And he got a little careless.

Reporter: Freddie, It appears that in that round Manny was really busting him out. Looks like Marquez’s face was falling apart, his nose is broken. And then the knockout came so sudden in the final 10 second, where it just a shock that he never saw it coming?

Freddie Roach: Yeah, he never saw it coming. Manny was swinging wild, and he got caught. It was a great knockout.

Reporter: Just a quick question about Marquez’s power. Was Marquez punching now harder than he ever were?

Freddie Roach: I think he’s punching harder. He is well developed. The first knockdown caught Manny but it didn’t really hurt him badly. It was a pretty good shot. He’s very strong, very physical a lot more than before. I think his punching power was improved yes.

Reporter: Freddie, following up on that 3rd round knockdown on that big right hand from Marquez. What was your level of concern in the corner? Was Manny shaken up in the corner?

Freddie Roach: No, he wasn’t affected by that too much. He was fully recovered by the time he went back to the corner. Going out into the 4th Round he had no problem whatsoever.

Reporter: What should Manny do right now?

Freddie Roach: That’s a tough question. He has to settle down a bit. You know possible retirement, possible rematch. I’m not sure which way we’re going right now. It really depends on how we feels and what he wants to do. And if we do fight again, we go back to the gym, if I see good signs we go on and if I see bad signs we won’t.

Reporter: Many said it was a candidate to the fight of the year. To lose a fight of that caliber, why would you advise him to retire? With a shot he didn’t see? What makes you think retirement?

Freddie Roach: No, the thing I said is we’ll see. There’s a lot to swallow. I said if he’s back in the gym, I see signs of him declining, I’ll tell him to retire. But if I don’t see that, I won’t tell him to retire. I would like to get a rematch but is that the best move right away? Maybe try him out with a softer fight first? There are a lot of different things we have to think about. It’s very complicated. It’s not going to be overnight.

Reporter: I would like to know if you see any signs of degradation in this fight.

Freddie Roach: No, I thought he fought a great fight. He fights a very smart fight. But he walks into one, and it happens.

Reporter: Freddie, you think Marquez was setting up Pacquiao the whole time with the counter right?

Freddie Roach: Well, that’s his best punch against Manny Pacquiao. He does that a few times in a fight. And he definitely did it that time, yes. It wasn’t a lucky punch, he set up us well. I was really surprise that he pull that off, as hurt as he was, but he did.

Reporter: If Juan Manuel Marquez goes on to fight Tim Bradley, how would you rate that fight?

Freddie Roach: It is a very good fight. Bradley is a good boxer. It’s a great match.

Reporter: Given the streak that you had in the past year, you seeing Nacho as a rival. Emotionally, how does it feel to take this lost?

Freddie Roach: It sucks. I hate losing. If we do get a rematch or another fight, I’d get Manny Pacquiao again a 100 percent. Focus like he did this fight, we could win.

Reporter: Is this the end for Manny Pacquiao?

Freddie Roach: I don’t think so. I don’t think this is the end for Manny Pacquiao. He knows he made a mistake. He got careless, that happens in boxing. It’s not the first time he got knocked out. With a lot of hard work, I’m sure we’ll be fine.

Reporter: He was eating a lot of leather to the body. Did you expect him to attack that way?

Freddie Roach: I think we pretty much expect being cut. I didn’t expect him to be heavy handed as he was. His right hand hurt Manny a lot more this time than his past fights.

Reporter: Being that the strategy being aggressive. Where there was a point that he need to pull back?

Freddie Roach: Yeah. He got a little bit aggressive. He wasn’t using his feints and he just walk into him. He (Marquez) was back in the corner, and I thought the fight will not last much longer on our side.
