Juan Manuel Marquez VS Juan Diaz Juan Round 1
Marquez with a good left hook, and he’s coming out to be aggressive it appears, shooting his jab first. Diaz not throwing a lot in the first minute. Marquez with a right over the top, doesn’t land square. Marquez goes to the body. Short little trade. They’re not warring right out this time, but Marquez starts throwing bombs. Diaz is tentative in there. And he’s getting hit for it. He looks overmatched already. But there’s a stiff left from Diaz. Right hand scrapes Marquez. Another good right by Diaz! He’s picking it up. Here he comes! This will, without question, fire up sooner than later. Good first round.

Juan Manuel Marquez VS Juan Diaz Round 2
Daiz trying to get inside, and there’s Marquez waiting for him. Every little exchange they have is hot. Brief, but hot. Marquez gets a body shit, Diaz clips him with a right upstairs. Diaz jabbing, Marquez trying to keep him back with his own in return. Diaz is clearly not as intent to war this time. And a good left hook, and another from Diaz. He’s not fighting poorly at all. What he did last time didn’t work, so he’s trying to switch it up. I can’t help but think Marquez will adjust and find a way to batter him, but so far this is quite interesting and a good fight.
Marquez really wants to war. You can feel it. But Diaz isn’t letting him do it just yet. Diaz wings a massive left that misses, but ends the round with a decent hook.

Juan Manuel Marquez VS Juan Diaz Round 3
Diaz’s corner wants the jab setting up the right hand.
Marquez is locked in trying to catch Diaz coming in on a counter, and Diaz is doing a good job so far not getting caught with those shots. Marquez is throwing so much harder than Diaz, but Diaz is doing a lot of good work too. And Diaz is making him miss more than last time. Now here they go for a second — but Diaz again calms himself down. Then unleashes some shots to the body. Crowd is getting hot. And rightly so, this is a very good fight so far.
Marquez starting to catch Diaz with those counter shots a little more. And now Marquez is throwing big and a big right lands! And a left hook! Marquez is starting to time him a bit, I think.
Marquez 10-9
Marquez 29-28
Juan Manuel Marquez VS Juan Diaz Round 4
Marquez swipes him with a left hook. Slower pace this round, but Marquez rocks him with a hard shot! Diaz keeps his feet, but he’s hit again! Diaz staying away, staying away, but Marquez is stalking and throwing hard shots! Diaz keeps his cool and might be able to get his legs back. That’s a big change for Juan Diaz. Marquez smells blood, though. And we know he’s got the killer instinct.
But Diaz does get his legs back, it appears. And Marquez pops him with a left hook a few moments later. Diaz charges, doesn’t get much for it. This became a survival round for Juan Diaz. Marquez with a right.
Marquez 10-9
Marquez 39-37
Juan Manuel Marquez VS Juan Diaz Round 5
Marquez back to trying to flat out time Diaz coming in, but Diaz isn’t coming in as recklessly as usual. He might have to at some point. More and more, JMM is trying to bait Diaz with the feints. Diaz is not fighting poorly at all, but he’s just a class below Marquez. Right hand shot by Marquez! Diaz is staying away, staying away, just not accomplishing much offensively. And another right hand lands! I mean, really, Diaz is doing his best. He’s trying something new, and really trying things that are working as well as you could hope, but he’s not as good as Marquez. I think that’s where we’re at with this fight.
Marquez 10-9
Marquez 49-46
Juan Manuel Marquez VS Juan Diaz Round 6
Marquez continues to stalk Diaz, who continues to circle. Then Diaz gets him with a thudding little right, and Marquez loves it — that’s exactly what he wants. He wants to trade. And Diaz is not obliging too often tonight. It’s a good fight, but not near last year’s fight. Good left hook and a good right by Marquez! And Diaz ties up. Now he’s on his bike in a big way to survive the final seconds of the round.
Marquez 10-9
Marquez 59-55
Juan Manuel Marquez VS Juan Diaz Round 7
Marquez lands a few shots, but not in a great place to do big damage. But he’s starting to really take over this fight and it feels inevitable now. This might go all 12, but if it does it’s because Diaz just never really goes for it, I’m feeling.
At this point in the fight, while I admire his willingness to try something new, it’s obvious THIS isn’t working either. Maybe if he starts rushing, he can catch Marquez slumbering just a bit. Marquez pounds Diaz moments after Diaz did throw a flurry, none of which landed much. Diaz did a couple good things again this round, but again Marquez did more good work. He’s just better. I mean that’s all there is to it.
Marquez 10-9
Marquez 69-64
Juan Manuel Marquez VS Juan Diaz Round 8
I’d really love to see Juan Diaz take a risk here. Anything. But he’s not doing it. He too obviously feels Marquez’s power every time he’s hit solidly. Marquez is in full control of this fight. And the pace has really dipped. But they war a bit at the end, Diaz getting a left hook, but he’s shaken the slightest bit and quits throwing. Diaz is totally out of this fight.
Marquez 10-9
Marquez 79-73
Juan Manuel Marquez VS Juan Diaz Round 9
Good right by Marquez hurts Diaz. Marquez really wants to fight and get the war on. Holy SHIT, Jim Lampley has ignored the other four or so clinches from Diaz tonight and insists that that one was the first of the two fights. Marquez has a lot of gas left and wants to use it. Diaz has no real interest in fighting Marquez anymore. Diaz is really not doing much of anything anymore, and this has turned into a genuine disappointment. I liked him trying something new, but that’s clearly not working at all. It’s almost the 10th round. It’s time to go for it if you actually came to win. No more of this “beautiful! stay on the outside!” shit. He has no chance of winning this fight if he doesn’t rip at Marquez and fast.
Diaz’s lip is cut and he looks really discouraged in the corner.
Marquez 10-9
Marquez 89-82
Juan Manuel Marquez VS Juan Diaz Round 10
Diaz has no real desire to be in there. Marquez is trying to land a hard shot anywhere he can, and Diaz is doing his best to just stay away from him. And this is the second straight fight where I think Diaz’s corner has given him absolutely awful advice. Just awful. Ronnie Shields is a fine, fine trainer, but I don’t think he’s meshing with Diaz at all anymore.
“With a life like his, and a brain like his, he shouldn’t take any chances.” Well why’s he in here? And why did we pay $50 for this fight?
Marquez easily wins another round.
Marquez 10-9
Marquez 99-91
Juan Manuel Marquez VS Juan Diaz Round 11
Diaz with a left hook. But that’s about all he does. There’s no real follow-up. Marquez’s right eye is about swollen totally shut, but Diaz just is not attacking. Good uppercut by Marquez, but probably not totally on point because Diaz didn’t react as much as it appeared he might have. Camera angle was from behind on the shot. Marquez has taken his foot off the gas a bit. Diaz wobbles a hair, but probably more balance. Juan Manuel Marquez VS Juan Diaz Round ends just after.
Diaz 10-9
Marquez 108-101
Juan Manuel Marquez VS Juan Diaz Round 12
Marquez’s intensity is still there, kind of, but it feels a bit forced. Like he’s doing just enough to keep Diaz at bay more than really trying to finish him off anymore. Marquez is 36 and has this fight in the bag, and he’s got a money fight coming next. He’s gotten marked up some. Actually he looks really unfocused in the last minute, at least for a moment, and then he wakes up on a Diaz left hook. Marquez and Diaz throw hard to end the bout, and Marquez gets the best of it. No real pleasantries at the end of the fight are exchanged.
I can’t lie — this was a perfectly alright fight, and sadly the best PPV main event of 2010, but it was very disappointing to me.
