Pacquiao News - Pacquiao is still the 1st on the Pound for Pound even after Marquez beat Casamayor. After more than two months (see my previous list), it's time for a Pound for Pound update. The following top 3 data are aggregate from the most famous boxing websites in the world. Pacquiao News sites which didn't update their rankings are excluded. Here are the latest tally as of September 20, 2008:

Overall: #1

ESPN: #1

"As much as so many of us want to see Pacquiao fight Juan Manuel Marquez for a third time, it can wait until next year. Pacquiao's Dec. 6 showdown with rainmaker Oscar De La Hoya is first up and it's a massive event, one that, love the matchup or hate it, has everyone's attention. That is good for everyone who loves boxing. De La Hoya-Pacquiao will be, by far, the biggest fight of 2008."

- Dan Rafael, ESPN

Maxboxing: #1

"Having stated that, I think any rational-thinking and emotionally stable individual can make an argument for Marquez being the best boxer on the planet, pound for pound, especially if you are among the many observers who believe he should have won his rematch with Manny Pacquiao."

- Doug Fischer, Maxboxing

Boxing Scene: #1

"Before he gets there in possible fights with Marquez or Jr. Welterweight king Ricky Hatton, he gets an Oscar and the question is already being asked: if he loses as just about everyone suspects he will, can he still hold this spot? It’s an interesting debate. The early impulse is to say wait and see. If Oscar wins this hand-picked vanity fight by blowout, it would be hard to justify the heights but if the fight is close, if it is genuinely competitive, then the ridiculous size difference present has to be a consideration even in a Pacquiao defeat."

"Of course Manny could always win and make the point moot, but most likely scenarios are more important considerations. Former Flyweight champions don’t often beat elite level guys, even over the hill ones like Oscar, who started near the Lightweight limit and peaked at Welterweight. If he can do it then, older names then those listed, names like Langford, will start coming up in the hyperbole of it all."

- Cliff Rold, Boxing Scene

Yahoo! Sports: #1

"Pacquiao retained his top spot for the third consecutive month, garnering 18 of the 23 first-place votes cast from the blue-ribbon panel of boxing writers and broadcasters from around the world. Should be unanimous No. 1 if he overcomes size disadvantage against De La Hoya."

- Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports

15 Rounds: #1

"It wasn’t too long ago when Marquez proved to many, that he clearly is one of the elite fighters in the game. Despite a draw and controversial decision loss to consensus top pound-for-pound fighter in the world in Manny Pacquiao, Marquez have shown in both outings that he probably was the superior fighter."

- Joon Lee, 15 Rounds

Boxing Confidential: #1

"No, what strikes me odd is that Manny Pacquiao, widely considered the best p4p fighter in the world today, actually found himself one heck of a challenging opponent. At a time when name fighters generally travel the safer route, and make "business" decisions regarding who they can generally beat, Manny is taking on an opponent who he is not favored to overcome. Isn't that exactly what a real fan should expect of the best pound for pound boxer in the world?"

- Izyaslav Koza, Boxing Confidential

Ring Report, MVN : #1

"I make no bones about Marquez being my favorite fighter. Yet even I had questions about whether he was a real lightweight. Now we know he’s not just a real lightweight, but he’s the champ of the division, and he’s got enough power to knock out a man that not even Diego Corrales or Acelina Freitas could. Let’s go one better. Marquez, off this win, is now in my opinion the second-best fighter on the planet, pound-for-pound. At worst. He might be better than Pacquiao, whom I now rank very hesitantly at #1."

- Tim Starks, Ring Report, MVN
