About David Diaz

Diaz was a member of the 1996 US Olympic team in Atlanta and is the current WBC lightweight champion. In a fight with José Armando Santa Cruz for the interim title on August 12, 2006, Santa Cruz seems to be winning in the early rounds, but Diaz recovered and won by stoppage on the 10th round. The final score was 88-83, 88-83, 87-84 all in favor of Santa Cruz.

On February 20, 2007, when Joel Casamayor, the WBC lightweight champion at the time, decided to pursue other fights and did not make the weight limit, the governing body stripped Casamayor of his title. Because of this, David Diaz by default became the title holder.

David Diaz first defense of his WBC lightweight belt was with Erik Morales. The former three division champion Erik Morales wanted to be the first Mexican to win a four weight division belt. Morales knockdown the 31 years old Diaz in the first round and seems to be winning the first half of the fight. But Diaz whose face was swolen, recovered in the second half. When the winner was announced, the Mexican legend Erik Morales was declared defeated on August 4, 2007. During the post-fight press conference, Morales who was 30 years old then, announced his retirement from boxing.
